What’s Ahead for Speaking Place?
Our team is hard at work planning impactful projects and initiatives that will strengthen the role of Wabanaki languages in daily life. Here’s a glimpse of what’s to come:
• Immersion Gatherings: Hosting community immersion events to connect learners with fluent speakers and foster conversational fluency in immersive environments.
• Language Resource Development: Creating tools like family conversation kits, translations of common signage for community spaces, and language games for homes and classrooms.
• Cultural Preservation Projects: Developing a Wabanaki songbook featuring traditional songs and their translations to ensure they are passed down to future generations.
• Scholarship Opportunities: Establishing scholarships to support community members in attending gatherings, training events, and furthering their language learning.
• Video Documentation: Continuing to document fluent speakers through video projects.
• Community Partnerships: Learning from successful programs like the Maliseet Immersion School and others to strengthen our approach.
We believe these projects will not only revitalize our languages but also reconnect us with our identity, culture, and shared history as Wabanaki people.
As we move forward, we express our heartfelt gratitude to Ben Levine for his years of service and vision. His contributions have laid the foundation for Speaking Place’s next chapter, and we look forward to carrying his legacy into the future.
